Here are some other things you can do to help the environment.

Your pets

Adopt a pet from a local animal shelter.

Have your pets spayed or neutered to reduce overpopulation and reduce the number of animals that end up in a shelter.

Plant more plants

Plant trees with a local environmental group. In Maryland, you can work with Treemendous Maryland.

Plant butterfly bushes in your yard to help out the threatened butterflies. Or better yet, have your backyard certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a backyard habitat. Go here for more info: www.nwf.org/BackyardWildlifeHabitat.

Conserve resources

Conserve water. Turn off the water while brushing teeth. Take shorter showers. Water your lawn less.

Conserve energy by setting your thermostats responsibly and insulating your home thoroughly. On short trips, walk instead of driving. On longer trips, use public transportation instead of driving. If you can telecommute, even for one day a week, you can reduce pollution and conserve gas.

Support environmental organizations

Donate time or money to environmental or animal causes. These are national organizations:

These are organizations local to Maryland:

  • Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary near Ellicott City will take in injured wildlife, restore them to health, and release them to the wild, and
  • Chesapeake Bay Foundation works to clean and preserve what is arguably Maryland's most precious natural resource: the Bay.
  •
